Namazuki

Letting my influences…influence me!

Namazuki (derived from the Japanese word for catfish: Namazu) was designed with the goal of creating an appealing design with an interesting gimmick. Based on the myth of transforming racoons, Namazuki has the ability to transform into a statue! From this simple concept, I began developing ideas as to what a transforming cat might look like.

From Concept to Character!

I had a pretty clear vision in my head based on some sketches, which I then pinned down to the three designs seen below. To keep the design consistent, I included elements that were incorporated into both forms, such as the markings on the head. This resulting in quite a satisfying transformation where you can clearly see the two forms are linked.

…From 2D to 3D!

Once I have a clear concept planned out, I begin work on the two models for Namazuki. I work on the base model first, then build the statue from scratch. Once Completed, I move on to the next phase.

After UV mapping and texturing the mode it’s animation time. In order to create an animation in 3D, a character must be rigged to a skeleton. For recent projects I’ve been experimenting with bone constraints that emulate physics - giving ears and tails a satisfying wiggle. Once rigged, I then design the main scene, setting Namazuki to a backdrop of pine trees; ruins and fog. Animation is next, along with camera movements to match.

This process from concept to outcome is a long process, made up of multiple different processes. But each part of the process provides new challenges that keep it fresh and engaging from my perspective. It makes the final piece that much more rewarding, knowing the effort I’ve put in!
