Creating Something Physical from the Digital.

Hiyoko Pocket is a monthly digital zine that showcases the world and characters of Hiyoko in a unique way.

I wanted to create something for viewers of my work to hold in their hands. However, at this stage of my career, I didn’t see a way I could tackle international shipping.

I had to think of a workaround. The solution I came up with was to create a digitally distributed product that can be printed off at home to become a physical product.

Zines are a fantastic little format, packing a little magazine into a small form factor - perfect for delivering my artwork in a new way!

It’s all a learning experience…

Hiyoko Pocket has been a fantastic project in terms of furthering my development as an artist and designer. It gave me a structure every month, forcing me to get into a routine where I create regularly.

This regularity really encouraged my growth, which can be seen clearly when I compare issue #1 with the latest issues.

However, the decision to create a digitally distributed product and promote it through Instagram was a poor choice business-wise. I think when people subscribe to something like this, they want something tangible, not to have to print it out themselves.
