HIYOKO.IRL
Mixing Reality with the Fantastical.
This project focused on playing with the ideas that arose when working on Hiyoko Trading Cards, where I wanted to push my creations into the physical space. I thought about making figures, but with limited budget and scope, I had to get creative.
‘Hiyoko.IRL’ is one solution I created in response to this desire to have my creations exist physically. To create this series, I shot a series of photos with no apparent subject in the frame… but something was there - You just couldn’t see it yet.
Using Photoshop to manually paste my creations into the scene, suddenly the images that had previously seemed empty suddenly burst with character!
Being Experimental Often Leads to Surprises.
After working on the series of images, I felt that I needed to incorporate graphic design elements to make the project feel more complete. This lead to even more experimentation, as I brushed the dust off my graphics skills that I often under-utilise.
This really tied the whole project together, providing a consistent through-line and theme that I think my audience would really be able to get behind.
I ended up really enjoying the outcomes of the project - a series of images that almost act as advertisements for my game project. This lead to another avenue of thinking… what if I was to develop this style further to create a magazine?
That could work. Perhaps that was my answer to this digital to physical conundrum!
